  • Christmas present exchange

    Date: Saturday 18th January 2025

    Time: 9.30-12

Location: Winton House, 18 High Street, Petersfield

Winton House Centre and PeCAN are running a Christmas Present Exchange in January.

Unwanted gifts are a reality in life - but one person's trash is another's treasure... Don't let those unwanted goodies go to waste!

Drop unwanted gifts (not charity shop goods) at Winton House from 7th - 17th January, collect your token, and then on Saturday 18th January between 9.30 and 12 noon, return to Winton House to select an exchange gift.

Alternatively, you can donate your token so that someone else in the community can choose a present. Anything left over will be used to benefit HomeStart Butser.

Drop-off unwanted gifts: Every weekday from Tuesday 7th January to Friday 17th January, between 9.30am and 3.30pm

Choose a replacement gift: Saturday 18th January between 9.30am and 12 noon

Winton House is located at 18 High Street, Petersfield. The Winton House Centre is a registered charity. Organisers might reject unsuitable items.

The aim is to reduce waste and provide a route for nice but unneeded gifts to find a new home where they will be more appreciated.

This is a project for the community by the community.

  • Six Inches of Soil Documentary screening and panel discussion 28th January 6.30-9.30pm

In collaboration with Bedales, PeCAN are hosting a screening of the film ‘Six Inches of Soil'.

The film tells the inspiring story of British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food – to heal the soil, benefit our health and provide for local communities.

It will be screened in Bedales theatre and followed by a discussion and Q&A session with a panel of local experts. The event will run from 18.30 – 21.30 on Tuesday 28th January (doors open at 18:30, and the film screening starts at 19:00, with panel discussion after the film).

Tickets are just £5 each. This covers the cost of screening the film, with anything remaining going towards future events organised by PeCAN.

    The panel will include:

William Benson, founder of Seedleaves at Applegarth Farm

Seedleaves are redefining the future of farming, on the Surrey-Hampshire border in Grayshott. By harnessing the power of vertical farming and advanced agricultural technologies, they have revolutionised the way they grow food. Their approach maximises space efficiency and minimises environmental impact, and they collaborate with leading providers to offer bespoke farming plans. They are passionate about sustainability and proud to be pioneers in modern agriculture.

Albert Hess, arable manager at Rotherfield Farms

Rotherfield Farms use regenerative farming principles over an area of 800 hectares, which includes all the forage requirements for their 400 dairy cows. The farm is part of the Selborne Landscape Partnership (SLP), a cluster of 27 farmers and conservationists restoring nature across the countryside that was home to Gilbert White, pioneering ecologist. Since 2014 SLP members have been improving habitats to establish wildlife corridors on a bigger, more joined-up landscape scale.

Sarah Langford, farm manager and author of Rooted

Sarah manages an organic arable and pasture farm in Suffolk and has a postgraduate degree in Agriculture. In her most recent book, Rooted: How Regenerative Farming Can Change The World, she shines a light on the human side of modern farming and shows how land connects us all, not only in terms of global sustainability but in our relationships with our physical and mental health, our communities and our planet.

Peter Moss, CEO of Downforce Technologies

Downforce Technologies provides science-based intelligence on soil health, soil organic carbon levels and biodiversity – data that is used to support sustainable land management practices. Soil erosion not only threatens food security but also exacerbates climate change by releasing carbon into the atmosphere. With over 30% of the world's soil already degraded, being able to measure soil health accurately at scale is key to addressing this pressing global challenge.

  • PeCAN Festival of Trees 22nd February at Petersfield Community Garden 10-2

This year we invite you to join us for a Festival of Trees - a special event run in partnership with PeCAN, Petersfield Community Garden, and East Hampshire District Council, to celebrate the benefits of trees and learn more about them. Click HERE to find out more about the event.

It will be an opportunity to find out more about tree care, planting, pruning, grafting on rootstock, and fan training. There will be free demonstrations throughout the day, as well as expert advice available on mini forests, soil suitability, and planting for the future - with climate change in mind.

This will be an event for the whole family, with activities for children - allowing them to explore tree seeds and find out how to identify different types of trees, as well offering a chance to get creative.

Over the past three winters PeCAN has distributed nearly 2000 trees via our Fruit Tree in Every Garden initiative, and this year we aim to add another 700 trees to that total!

If you would like to pre-order a fruit tree for only £12.50 to collect at the Tree Festival you can order them HERE.
